LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL FOR MWANGAZA?

The Meru Members of County Assembly (MCAs) have filed a motion to impeach Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

This supremacy battle between Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza and the MCAs has reached boiling point as the impeachment motion has been drafted and signed by 68 of the 69 MCAs.

A Meru MCA, who also doubles as the Minority Chief  Whip, has presented a petition before the Meru County Assembly seeking to have Governor Kawira Mwangaza impeached.

The Abogeta West MCA, Dennis Kiogora, points to various grounds for impeaching the governor, saying that the governor has infringed the Leadership and Integrity act of Section 10 in the constitution.

Kawira’s decision to appoint her husband Baichu Murega as the patron of the Meru Youth Service and ‘Hustlers’ ambassador is one of the grounds cited for her removal.


Only Kiagu MCA, Simon Ngaruni, did not sign the motion saying that Kawira had done nothing wrong to warrant impeachment. He said when the governor wanted to address the MCAs last month, they walked out on her.

"They denied her a chance. We cannot survive without talking and building consensus. My colleagues are not speaking with the governor. I am not ready to go that route,” averred Ngaruni.

Abogeta West MCA, Kiogora, also accused the governor of reappointing Rufus Miriti, the County Secretary, without the MCAs' approval.

"The Governor has engaged in multiple discreditable acts that severally and collectively amount to gross violation of the Constitution, gross violation of various national and county laws, abuse of office, and gross misconduct," reads part of the petition.

Meru governor Kawira Mwangaza on Thursday moved to court in an attempt to stop the plan by the Meru Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) to topple her.

Kawira's case will be heard on November 28.

All Eyes on the Senate: Gachagua's Impeachment Battle Reaches Critical Stage

In a high-stakes session, 281 MPs voted in favor of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s removal , with only 44 opposing and one MP abstaining during the impeachment motion on October 8, 2024 . Following this dramatic decision by the National Assembly, Gachagua now faces a critical showdown in the Senate. The next phase will determine whether Gachagua is officially removed from office or if he survives the political storm that has engulfed him.
