All Eyes on the Senate: Gachagua's Impeachment Battle Reaches Critical Stage

In a high-stakes session, 281 MPs voted in favor of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s removal , with only 44 opposing and one MP abstaining during the impeachment motion on October 8, 2024 . Following this dramatic decision by the National Assembly, Gachagua now faces a critical showdown in the Senate. The next phase will determine whether Gachagua is officially removed from office or if he survives the political storm that has engulfed him. The charges against him include gross violations of the Constitution, undermining the president, and economic crimes, placing his role as Deputy President in jeopardy.  The Senate will soon convene to either appoint a special 11-member committee to investigate the charges or hear the case in a full plenary session.
