I'm not used to such kind of long posts but I'm going to try today 'cause this journey deserves it! πŸ™ˆ When I first walked through the doors of Nation Media Group in February 2025, I carried with me years of preparation, passion for journalism, and a determination to make the most of this opportunity. As a graduate who has completed my Bachelor's in Journalism and Mass Communication with a focus on Electronic Media at Daystar University and is awaiting graduation in November 2025, I was finally stepping into one of East Africa's most prestigious media houses. HOW TO BE AN ONLINE CHASING WRITER.

You well-know that words can influence, inspire, and inform. Anybody can become an online writer, but it is all about passion and consistency. What you may not have realized is that your words can change the world.

Online writing is super easy, and these are some of the steps one can build on.

But first things first: writing is a TALENT at the same time an ART. Before you even think on embarking on this exciting journey, gauge your passion.

First, one needs to know who they are. What does it mean by ‘Knowing who you are?’ Figuring out who you are and what you should write about are some of the setbacks new writers face. To evade this, you must have a personal definition of what success is and know where your individual strengths lie. This becomes a ‘walk in the park’ or a smooth sail on online writing. Personally, I came to discover my strengths after training with Kenyawriters.com and ajiradigital.go.ke . For more on this, check out my blog https://nkathanivah.blogspot.com/

Secondly, you should get out there and start pitching. This calls for writing samples through various social media platforms that are accessible to potential clients. You can consider starting a blog or create your own website for more exposure. REMEMBER, PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT, CONTINUE WRITING REGULARLY TO POLISH YOUR SKILLS.

Thirdly, know that the work is not always glamorous. In as much as you want your articles to be recognized by well-known writing companies, remember that Rome was not built in a day. Start small and grow; you will reach there. By starting small you can perhaps write and save your article on WhatsApp status, where it can only be viewed by your contact list, for example and gradually grow to feature in key newspapers and magazines.

Fourth, network, network, network. As an online writer, networking is the secret to success because it wideness your scope of exposure. Creating portfolios on websites like LinkedIn can help you reach out to other writers who will link you up to their uplines. You need to network with like minded people. Therefore, the more people you know the easier you are accessible to openings for your growth.

Lastly, learn how to invest in yourself. ‘There is no more profitable investment than investing in yourself.” Once you have fully developed your writing and editing skills you can become a freelancer. To ensure your investment is worth it, put in the work yourself and you will be sure to receive results. This may not happen in the wink of an eye but may take time, hence calling for faith and belief in yourself.

If you are thinking of becoming an online writer, the time is NOW. Start it. Be your own motivation.πŸ˜‰
